Editor, 1999 SACS Self-Study, Spring 1997-Summer 1999. Responsibilities included

the following:

Participated in Steering Committee meetings, Summer 1997-Spring 1999.

Developed and distributed editorial guidelines for the Self-Study Report.

Assisted and advised the Steering Committee in developing the Self-Study Plan,

the Self-Study Manual, and other letters, documents, and reports related to the self-study.

Assisted and advised the Steering Committee in preparing the Self-Study

Report.

Edited and revised (sometimes extensively) individual chapters and sections of the SACS Self-

Study Report.

Worked with production team to determine final format of the SACS Self-Study

Report.

Represented SWT at the SACS Annual Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana,

December 1997, and in Atlanta, Georgia, December 1998.

Supervised production of two proof copies of the 580-page SACS Self-

Study Report. Proof copies were produced on schedule December 1998.

Completed final proofreading and assisted with production and distribution of

the 580-page Self-Study Report.

Helped to plan, edited, and helped to produce the Self-Study Addendum.

Met almost daily with SACS Self-Study Director Charles Pascoe and Secretary Karen Harrison

to plan and implement the final phases of the self-study, Spring 1999.

Helped to coordinate the SACS Visiting Committee’s campus visit April 12-15,

1999. Responsibilities included helping to organize and prepare materials and schedules, make appointments requested by committee members, set up work rooms on and off campus, and provide transportation for committee members.

Helped to plan, edited, and helped to produce the Response to

Recommendations, Summer 1999.

Assisted University College Dean Ron Brown in developing portfolio assessment in

University College, Fall 1999. Researched assessment of college admission essays, and scored some 200 1999 SWT admission essays as the foundation pieces for student portfolios.

Developed the current correspondence course for College Writing I (English 1310), 1996;

revised 1998.

Presented for Southwest Texas State University Staff Development, workshops on

Effective Business English, November 1998 and February 1996. More than 200 people attended the two workshops.

Presented for Southwest Texas State University Financial Aid Office, workshop on

Effective Business English, March 1996.

 

Department of English Service

Associate Director of First-Year English, 1994-present. Regular duties include the

following:

Observe classes of all Department of English TAs: once a semester for first-year TAs, once

a year for experienced TAs. (From Fall 1994 through Fall 1999, I observed 280 full classes, plus provided the follow-up specified below.)

Provide a written class visit report and hold a follow-up conference (1/2 hour) for each class visit.

Provide teaching materials, class activities, and other pedagogical advice to TAs. Some of

these materials are made available to everyone; other materials are provided as requested by individual TAs.

Assemble and maintain Resource Manuals for English 1300, 1310, and 1320. These collections of teaching materials are available to and used by all First-Year English faculty.

Collect, review, provide feedback on, and maintain files of TAs' syllabi, assignments, and other class materials.

Read and summarize one class set of student evaluations per TA for Fall semester.

Write letters of recommendation, as requested. (In Spring 1999, for example, I wrote professional recommendations for 9 TAs.)

Compile and produce an annual "Profile of Teaching Assistants in the Department of English" to document the qualifications of Department of English TAs.

Communicate and collaborate with the Director of Lower-Division Studies on issues related to program management and development.

Answer questions and solve problems raised on a near-daily basis by TAs, related primarily to program policy, classroom management, teaching activities and strategies, writing assignments, and grading.

Assist the Director of Lower-Division Studies in conducting workshops for TAs.

 

 

Additional specific First-Year English projects have included the following:

Revised TA Class Visit Report to reflect the 7 principles for good practice in

undergraduate education, Fall 1999. Focused on the 7 principles when offering feedback following class visits.

Developed a unit plan for teaching Tim O’Brien’s If I Die in a Combat Zone, to

guide TAs and faculty teaching the novel in 1320 Spring 2000.

Worked with Tom Grimes to set up Tim O’Brien’s Spring 2000 sessions for 1320

students in FH 341.

Prepared and implemented a professional development plan in Spring 1999 for

a TA not meeting expectations. Implementation included making frequent class visits, overseeing the TA’s planning and grading, and devising and analyzing a midterm evaluation of the TA’s teaching.

Substituted for several TAs who missed classes due to illness or family

emergency Spring 1999.

Drafted and revised(with Michael Hennessy) the University College "Reading

and Writing Requirement" document, 1998.

Chaired First-Year English Handbook Textbook Selection Subcommittee, Spring

1998, and 1310 Reader Textbook Selection Subcommittee, Spring 1995.

Hosted The St. Martin’s Handbook senior editor Marilyn Moller, April 1996. Arranged for

class visits and spoke at length with her about our use of The St. Martin’s Handbook in SWT's first-year English program.

Activities: Responsible for developing and implementing policy related to

First-Year English, and for overseeing selection of First-Year English textbooks every three years.

Teacher Preparation Committee, 1993-present.

Special Project: Developed materials and presented once each semester Fall

1997-present, with Patricia Margerison, Nancy Wilson, and Beckie Kennedy, review sessions for the English ExCET (Examination for the Certification of Educators in Texas).

Founding Coordinator, San Marcos CISD Volunteers in Public Schools Program,

1987-93. Highlights included the following:

Wrote and received a funded grant for $ 58,563, from the Texas Governor's Educational

Excellence Committee, for parent involvement activities implemented at

Crockett Elementary, 1991.

Named the State-wide "Friend of Education" by the Texas Classroom Teacher's Association,

1993.

Developed, implemented, and coordinated a district-wide volunteer program that grew from 65

volunteers contributing 2300 hours of volunteer time in 1988, to nearly 500 volunteers contributing nearly 13,000 hours of volunteer time by 1992.

Received award for "Outstanding Campus Volunteer Program in Texas: Bonham Pre-K, San
