Total # of hours required: 36. First-Year English: 6 hrs. English 1310/20 College Writing I and II. English 1310 and 1320 are prerequisites to all other English courses.
Sophomore Literature: 6 hrs. Majors will select any two of the following: English *2310, 2320, *2330, 2340, *2359, 2360. Majors who earn at least a B in their first sophomore course have the option to enroll in an advanced literature course in place of the second sophomore course. No more than 6 hours of sophomore literature count toward the major.
English 3301 Literature and the Contemporary Reader: 3 hours. This course should be taken immediately after completing sophomore literature. It may be taken concurrently with other advanced courses.
Advanced Courses: 21 hrs. Majors who elect the creative writing emphasis must take at least one advanced course from each group
plus 9 hours of electives in creative writing. In selecting from groups or in choosing electives, students are encouraged to take at least two courses which center on genre, theme, or theory. One of the advanced courses must focus on the works of a single author (3343, 3354, 4351, 4355, 4358). The department recommends that students take this course at the end of the major.
In choosing their 9 hours of electives, majors with the Creative Writing Emphasis must take 3315, then select either the fiction track (3348, 4348) or the poetry track (3349, 4349). *Literature before 1800: 6 hrs. In selecting sophomore and advanced courses, majors must include at least 6 hours of literature before 1800. Sophomore and advanced courses which satisfy this requirement are identified by an asterisk above.
English majors are also required to complete the following courses for graduation: - Minor - 18 to 24 semester credit hours
- Modern Language - a proficiency level of a successful completion of the second semester of the sophomore course (2310, 2320) in the language. Most students will need to complete 1410 and 1420 before attempting 2310 and 2320.
- BA Science Requirement – All students pursuing the Bachelor of Arts degree are required to complete an additional science course in addition to the course required for the Core Curriculum. Courses can be selected from Math, Anthropology (2414 only), Biology, Chemistry, Geography (2410 only), Geology, Physics, Computer Science, and Philosophy (2330 only—logic).
