Modern Poetry

Description
A survey of modern poetry, emphasizing its international, multicultural, and revolutionary aspects. Rather than reading a handful of "major" poets, we will look broadly at the landscape of modern poetry, with particular attention to such experimental movements as Futurism, Dada, Surrealism, and Negritude. We will study poems as language experiments, as performance, and as play.

Books
Jerome Rothenberg and Pierre Joris, Poems for the Millennium (Vol. 1); Eliot Weinberger and Octavio Paz, Nineteen Ways of Looking at Wang Wei

Requirements
Two papers (or alternative projects), an essay midterm, and an essay final
