Description
The purpose of English 3321, the Short Story, is to provide you with a thorough, comprehensive introduction to the short story, as a literary form, from its roots in the anecdote, romance, and tale, and its origins in the 19th century, through its present practitioners. Through assigned readings, class discussions, and class assignments, you will gain a more complete knowledge of the formal parameters of the short story as literary form.

Grading
Your grade in this course will be determined according to several criteria. There will be two essay-exams during the term. These will count 22% each (44% total); there will also be four multiple-choice reading exams, each worth 12.5% (50% total). The remainder of your grade will be taken from daily assignments/quizzes. The breakdown of the grade is as follows:

  1. Two essays (600 words each), 22% each: 44%
  2. Four multiple choice (scantron) exams, 12.5% each; 50%
  3. Quizzes, Daily Grades: 6%

Attendance
You will be expected to attend class regularly and on time. You are allowed four absences. After four absences, your grade will be affected. If you miss more than six classes, you will receive an F in the course. University athletic or scholastic events constitute legitimate, excused absences. You must verify such absencew with documentation, however.

Late Work, Etc.
You will receive a zero for any quizzes you miss during the term. These may not be made up (but your bottom three or so grades will be dropped at the end of the semester). Exams may be made up under specific circumstances, in consultation with prof, but only with approval. You're expected to behave maturely during the class. Sleeping, newspaper reading, disruptive talking, and unannounced departures (except in cases of illness) will not be tolerated. You may be barred from class if your behavior warrants.
