The following is a list of common grammatical errors and their approximate deductions. The errors are listed according to their relative severity, and are followed by the grading symbol and the section of the St. Martin's Handbook for Writers in which the definition and ways of correcting the error are listed. The (R) symbol refers to those errors which the student is required to revise.

I. Capitol Felonies (punishable by an automatic F on the assignment and perhaps in the course)

3. Correct the sentence or error.

If there is a bracket out to the side of the passage to be revised, it indicates that a whole series of sentences, or perhaps a paragraph, needs revision. Otherwise you may confine your revisions to the sentence(s) or the specific word errors that need revision.
