The assistantship hiring committee evaluates the following:

  • your undergraduate and graduate transcripts
  • your 500-word statement of purpose regarding your interest in and potential for teaching
  • your three letters of recommendation addressing your potential as a teacher
  • GRE scores (if you have taken the exam and wish to include them; if you have not taken the GRE, it will not count against your application)

The committee considers the following as indicators of teaching ability:

  • classroom teaching experience, especially at the secondary school or college level
  • assisting a professor by grading papers or leading classroom discussions
  • tutoring in a writing center
  • experience as a writer, editor, copy editor or proofreader
  • an assessment of your teaching potential in your letters of reference
  • the strength, clarity, and passion in your statement of purpose
