PROGRAM FOR ENGLISH MAJORS

BACHELOR OF ARTS DEGREE WITH TEACHING CERTIFICATE

 
 
 

Total # of hours required: 36.

 

First-Year English: 6 hrs. English 1310/20 College Writing I and II. English 1310 and 1320 are prerequisites to all other English courses.

 

Sophomore Literature: 6 hrs. Majors will select any two of the following courses: *2310, 2320, *2330, 2340, *2359, 2360. Majors who earn at least a B in their first sophomore course have the option to enroll in an advanced literature course in place of the second sophomore course. No more than 6 hours of sophomore literature count toward the major.

 

English 3301 Literary Theory and Practice for English Majors: 3 hrs. This course should be taken immediately after completing sophomore literature. It may be taken concurrently with other advanced courses.

 

Advanced Courses: 21 hrs. One of the advanced courses must focus on the works of a single author (3343, 3354, 4351, 4355, or 4358). The department recommends that students take this course at the end of the major.   It is recommended that students take at least two courses which center on genre, theme, or theory.

 

            Group A - British Literature: (1 course from Group A required)

     *3351, *3352, *3353, *3354, *3356, *3357, *3359, 3362, 3365, 3368, 3370, *4351,

     *4355, *4358.
 

            Group B - American Literature: (2 courses from Group B required)

                 3309, 3326, 3331, *3333, 3335, 3336, 3338, 3344, 3345, 3346, 3347, 4325, 4334.

 

            Group C - World Literature: (1 course from Group C required)

                 3321, 3322, 3323, 3325, *3327, 3328, 3329, 3341, *3350, 3385, 3386, 3388, *3392,

                  3393.

 

Group D - Forms, Language, and Writing:

(2 specific courses from Group D required: 3319 OR 4310; 3389)

3302, 3303, 3304, 3307, 3311, 3315, 3316, 3319, 3320, 3340, 3342, 3343, 3348, 3349, 3389, 4310, 4323, 4348, 4349.

                            

            One additional advanced course from any of the 4 groups above is required.

                       

            NOTE: Before enrolling in English 3389, a student must have completed at least 90 semester credit hours, and be student teaching in the next semester.

 

*Literature before 1800: 6 hrs.   In selecting sophomore and advanced courses, majors must include at least 6 hours of literature before 1800. Sophomore and advanced courses which satisfy this requirement are identified by an asterisk above.                                                                                                                                                                   

                                                                                                                                               

English majors are also required to complete the following courses for graduation:

 

·         Minor - 18 to 24 semester credit hours

 

·         Modern Language - a proficiency level of a successful completion of the second semester of the sophomore course (2310, 2320) in the language. Most students will need to complete 1410 and 1420 before attempting 2310 and 2320.

 

·         BA Science Requirement – All students pursuing the Bachelor of Arts degree are required to complete an additional science course in addition to the course required for the Core Curriculum. Courses can be selected from Math, Anthropology (2414 only), Biology, Chemistry, Geography (2410 only), Geology, Physics, Computer Science, and Philosophy (2330 only—logic).

 

·         BA candidates for teacher certification must also complete CI 3310, 3325, 4332, 4343; RDG 3323; and ED 4681.

 

Core Curriculum requirements

 

Other requirements for graduation:

 

·         A minimum of 128 semester credit hours

 

·         A minimum of 46 semester credit hours in Core Curriculum

 

·         A minimum of 39 semester credit hours of advanced courses

 

·         A minimum of 9 semester credit hours in writing intensive courses
