About Sigma Tau Delta

(click here for more information on the Omega Episilon Chapter)

Sigma Tau Delta was originally founded in 1924 at Dakota Wesleyan College in Mitchell, South Dakota, by Professor Judson Q. Owen. Since then it has grown to become one of the largest members of the Association of College Honor Societies with over 600 active chapters, more than 900 faculty sponsors, and inducting approximately 7,000 members annually.

Sigma Tau Delta's central purpose is to recognize outstanding achievements in the study of English language and literature in undergraduate, graduate, and professional studies. It also recognizes the accomplishments of professional writers who have contributed to the fields of language and literature. Sigma Tau Delta comes from the Greek letters representing the first letter of each of the words that form the official motto, "Sincerity, Truth, Design"; the official colors are cardinal and black.

Through the work of chapters on the campuses of more than six hundred colleges and universities, Sigma Tau Delta provides exceptional students with opportunities for advancing the study of language and literature, for developing skills in creative and analytical writing, and for meeting other scholars and professionals in the discipline of English. The International Honor Society also seeks to aid its members by providing thousands of dollars in scholarships annually and by providing members avenues to publish and present their work

One of the most notable features of the honor society from its earliest years to the present has been its national gatherings, which are still today a relatively unique happening for college student organizations.  Sigma Tau Delta's first convention met in Des Moines in 1925.  In the 1970s, these national gatherings became biannual and, more recently, annual. At these regional conferences and at the annual international convention, students may present original creative and analytical work and network with students, faculty, and professionals from around the country and abroad.

Members of Sigma Tau Delta have the opportunity to publish their writing in one of several literary publications, and student members are eligible to compete for a number of writing awards. In addition, student members may receive international recongition through academic scholarships, professional internships, and teaching awards.
