Sigma Tau Delta Scholarship & Award Opportunities

Scholarships
The Sigma Tau Delta Junior Scholarship (E. Nelson James Scholarship)
Worth up to $2,000, this scholarship is given to a student member applying during the junior year. Dr. James served as second Executive Secretary of Sigma Tau Delta and Editor of The Rectangle.

The Sigma Tau Delta Senior Scholarship (Elva Bell McLin Scholarship)
Worth up to $2,000, this scholarship is awarded to a student member applying during the senior year (winners may be enrolled as 5th year seniors or graduate students enrolled in an English program when they receive their stipend). Dr. McLin served as Southern Regent and National Historian of Sigma Tau Delta.

The Sigma Tau Delta Graduate Scholarship (Edwin L. Stockton, Jr. Scholarship)
Worth up to $2,000,this scholarship is awarded to a current graduate student who will be continuing in graduate school. Dr. Stockton was the fourth National President of the Society.

The Henry Regnery Endowed Scholarship
Worth up to $2,500, this scholarship does not require applicants to be in a specific year of college. This scholarship was endowed in 1992 in honor of Henry Regnery, founder of Regnery Publishing, Inc., in Washington, DC.

The Sigma Tau Delta Study Abroad Scholarships
Worth up to $2,000, this scholarship is for active undergraduate members studying for an academic term or year in a certified undergraduate program outside of the country in which their chapter is located. In addition to the scholarships, runners up in each category are presented with awards of up to $500. The essays of scholarship applicants also qualify for a $100 Application Award.

Awards

Individual Awards
Elaine W. Hughes Outstanding Sponsor Awards
Given annually to recognize a sponsor who gives generously of his or her time, talents, and creativity to a local chapter. Award recipients receive up to $500.

P.C. Somerville Awards for Future Teachers
For Sigma Tau Delta active members who will begin their first year of teaching elementary, middle, or high school English by 15 September following the application deadline. Award recipients receive up to $1,000.

Isabel Sparks President's Awards
Given for the best presentations by active student members at a Sigma Tau Delta International Convention. The top award of $200 was established in 1991 by Isabel Sparks, fifth National President of Sigma Tau Delta. Additionally, at least one award of $100 each is given in four categories: Analytical essay, Personal essay, Poetry, and Fiction

Scholarly Paper Awards
Sigma Tau Delta will award $150 each for the best undergraduate and best graduate student scholarly paper presented at a non-Sigma Tau Delta professional conference during the year prior to one month before the application deadline.

Personal Web Site Awards
Members may apply for an award for their personal web pages. Web sites will be judged on creativity and usability of design, as well as how well they support or advance purposes and principles (see the Constitution and/or Handbook). Award recipients may receive up to $200.

Rectangle Awards
Rectangle awards are given to Society members who have submitted original works to The Rectangle. Winners are announced at the annual convention and are awarded $300. The award categories are:
· Eleanor B. North Poetry Award
· Frederic Fadner Critical Essay Award
· Herbert L. Hughes Short Story Award
· Judson Q. Owen Best Writing of any Genre Award
· Elizabeth Holtze Best Personal or Informal Essay Award

Chapter Awards
Outstanding Chapter Award
Given to those chapters that have exhibited outstanding motivation, creativity, and service. The awards, which consist of up to $350 and an engraved plaque, are presented annually at the International Convention.

Outstanding Literary Arts Journal Award
Literary Arts Journals, coordinated and supervised by Sigma Tau Delta chapters (even if they receive funding from other sources) are eligible for a variety of awards of up to $500 each.

Chapter Web Site Award
Chapters may apply for an award for their web pages. Web sites will be judged on creativity and usability of design, as well as how well they support or advance purposes and principles (see the Constitution and/or Handbook). Award recipients may receive up to $200.

Service Awards
Honoring chapters performing exemplary community service projects and benefiting the agencies served by those chapters. The society will make a limited number of awards, each of which will consist of a plaque for the chapter and a contribution of up to $200 to the agency.
