Medieval and Renaissance Studies


 

This 24-hour minor provides a transhistorical, interdisciplinary, and multicultural perspective on European cultures from the fall of Rome to the late 17th century. Two core courses provide the foundation for further in-depth study of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance in specific fields such as literature, history, art, dance, mathematics, music, philosophy, political science, technology and theatre arts.

 

Required core courses (6 hours):

  • English 2310 Survey of English Literature from Beowulf through the Age of Classicism
          OR
  • English 2330 A Survey of World Literature before 1600

 

  • History 2310 Western Civilization to 1715
          OR
  • History 2311 History of World Civilization to the 17th century

 

After choosing two of the required core courses, one in English and one in History, you will choose the remaining 18 hours (6 courses) from the following courses. *No more than three courses (including core courses) in a single department may count toward this minor.

  • Art History: 2301, 2302, 4306, 4322
  • Dance: 4368
  • English: 3319, 3350, 3351, 3352, 3353, 3354, 3356, 3392, 4351, 4355, 4358
  • History: 3312, 3315, 4307, 4317, 4320
  • Honors: Selected Courses*
  • Mathematics: 4311 (Prerequisites Math 3315 and Math 2331 or 2472)
  • Spanish: 3301
  • Philosophy: 2311
  • Political Science: 3332, 3333, 4313
  • Technology: 3322
  • Theatre Arts: 3320, 3346
