Resources for Student Mental Health Concerns

With the increasing amount of students needing help with mental health issues, faculty and staff should learn the challenges that students face, the signs of a student in need, and effective approaches to recommending resources. This page provides articles and websites that you can refer to.

Here is an announcement you may wish to post on your own Canvas sites:

Being in college for the first time can be stressful enough as it is, and for many of you, there are additional issues that you have had to deal with that can make things even more difficult. I want to remind you all that there are a number of resources both on and off campus that can help. Here is a list of a few that I have put together, but this is not comprehensive. If you know of any additional resources that you think may be helpful, feel free to email them to me and I can add them here.

1. The Counseling Center - https://www.counseling.txstate.edu/ - The counseling center at Texas State provides free counseling for individual students, as well as groups for various issues including but not limited to grief, anxiety, addiction, etc.

2. The Student Health Center - https://www.healthcenter.txstate.edu/ - The student health center is a great resource for your medical needs, including psychiatric needs. Even if you do not have insurance, or the student health center does not take your insurance, it only costs $30 for most appointments (for psychiatric appointments, it is $50 for your first visit and $30 for each subsequent one).

3. The Hays-Caldwell Women's Center - https://www.hcwc.org/ - This is a local resource for victims of domestic and/or sexual abuse. They provide a number of free services to victims of abuse regardless of gender identity or expression. Those services include, but are not limited to, providing shelter for those in immediate danger, helping with legal representation, and providing free counseling for up to 6 months (this can be helpful even if you are not currently in an abusive situation but are suffering from mental health issues as a result of abuse). They also have a 24-hour helpline you can call.
