Our Faculty
Our award-winning Department faculty include experienced and dedicated lecturers and senior lecturer, as well as tenured and tenure-track teachers, researchers and creative writers. With awards ranging from university honors and distinctions to numerous national and international sources, including the Guggenheim Foundation, Whiting Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, National Endowment for the Humanities, the American Poetry Foundation, and many others, our distinguished faculty are dedicated to the success of our students.
Our Programs
From courses in technical and scientific writing, to children’s and young adult literature, our Department is committed to fostering a passion for literature that represents a diverse range of world authors, as well as ethnicities and cultures, literary periods, and theoretical approaches. In addition, our rotating special topics courses offers students the opportunity to explore specialized and single-author topics.
At the Texas State Department of English, we prepare students for a wide range of careers in teaching, law, management, technical communication, as well as roles in developing creative media fields. Our ever-expanding internship and study abroad programs provide our students with the global resources they need to pursue the career of their dreams.
Graduate Programs
Graduate students in all four master’s programs in English have a strong record of success, with alumni obtaining outstanding positions in fields related to technical communication, rhetoric and composition, and literature. In addition to going on to teach and write at secondary, community college, and university levels, alumni of our graduate programs develop careers in management and administration in public and private sectors, editing, publishing, video production, film criticism, and other areas. Many students in master’s programs have gone on to complete doctoral programs and take full-time positions at colleges and universities. Many dozens of alumni of the MFA in creative writing program have published books at prestigious presses – some award-winning – in the genres of fiction, poetry, and creative non-fiction. Hundreds more published stories, poems, and essays appear in outstanding literary journals and other venues.
Affiliate Programs and Resources
We encourage our students to take advantage of the department's extraordinary resources, including our endowed chair in creative writing, the nationally recognized annual Clark Award for fiction, the TKL endowment, which brings nationally recognized creative writers and scholars each year, The Porter House Review literary journal, and our expanding University Writing Center. The department also boasts a robust online MA option in Technical Communication, as well as strong ties to minors in African American and Latino/a Studies, programs in the Center for the Study of the Southwest, and to the Honors College.
